“I didn’t choose Davis. Davis chose me,” shared Frank Acosta when asked about starting 3rd Street Jeweler in downtown Davis. And after spending some time visiting with Frank, you can see why Davis weighed-in on that choice.
Frank is no stranger to the Davis community. In his 38-year career as a jeweler, 24 of those years have been in downtown Davis. Prior to launching his own business in Davis, Frank honed his skills working for other jewelers in the Sacramento area, including Rogers Jewelers, DeVon’s Jewelers in Davis Commons.
In 2007, DeVon’s Jewelers decided to close the Davis store. That’s when Frank made the decision to open his own business here in Davis. He had spent several years building a loyal clientele and knew that this was an opportunity to do something on his own. Working with a local Remax agent, Frank found a home for his business on 3rd Street near I Street in downtown Davis.
There was much to do to get his jewelry business up and running; painting, carpeting, display case installation, and more. There was plenty of work to go around. Friends and family all pitched-in to make it happen so Frank could open 3rd Street Jewelers and begin serving customers.
The town embraced him. 3rd Street Jewelers hit the ground running and immediately began working it’s way toward success. By working in the industry for so many years, Frank developed many wonderful customers who were more than willing to support him and his new business. 3rd Street Jewelers enjoys serving his clients from Davis as well as his clients from Sacramento, the Bay Area, and throughout Yolo County.
“One thing I recognize about Davis is that it’s a very family oriented town,” shared Frank. “The community supports one another in every cause. They support their local businesses. They want to see them strive. It’s a great place to have a small business.”
Frank cares for his customers as if they are family; sharing stories, listening to problems, providing words of comfort. His love for his customers has allowed to Frank to build wonderful relationships, serving families across multiple generations. Grandparent, parents, and grandchildren visit with Frank for his jewelry services. But, be careful with what you share with Frank. Your grandchildren just may find out how the grandparents actually met.
Frank feels blessed to be jeweler in Davis and be involved with families and those special moments. “What I love about this business, is that people have to come to see you at every special occasion. Whether it be an engagement, whether it be a birthday, whether it be a Christmas gift, whether it be an anniversary gift. So all those events I’m part of.”
When asked about locating his jewelry business in downtown Davis, Frank shared, “I love downtown Davis. There’s a lot of community activity on different holidays. It’s a tight community and I love all that about it because it’s meant for families to gather in a safe environment.”
Frank is also a fan of the food scene in downtown Davis. He has plenty of options to choose from, but you will likely find him enjoying a salmon dish from Tim’s Hawaiian BBQ on 2nd Street or Outpost Burger up on G Street.
Giving back to the community is high on Frank’s list. He generously donates to the local school fundraisers. The organization that is near and dear to his heart is the Yolo Crisis Nursery. “Every year, I do a giving tree. And I’ve been doing it for the past 14 15 years” shares Frank.
Near the Christmas Holiday, the Yolo Crisis Nursery, brings 3rd Street Jewelers about 50 children’s names on ornaments. He displays them on his tree and promotes the gifting program to his customers.
The customers will take an ornament, or two, and go shopping for the child named on the ornament. Customers bring the gifts to Frank.
And then, right before Christmas, Yolo Crisis Nursery picks up the gifts. Not all the ornaments get chosen.
This is where Frank’s generosity really steps in, “So what I do, after everybody is basically done shopping, I take those remaining name tags and then I go shopping and fill the order for Yolo Crisis Nursery.”
